“Teachers are often unaware of the gender distribution of talk in their classrooms. They usually consider that they give equal amounts of attention to girls and boys, and it is only when they make a tape recording that they realize that boys are dominating the interactions.

Dale Spender, an Australian feminist who has been a strong advocate of female rights in this area, noted that teachers who tried to restore the balance by deliberately ‘favouring’ the girls were astounded to find that despite their efforts they continued to devote more time to the boys in their classrooms. Another study reported that a male science teacher who managed to create an atmosphere in which girls and boys contributed more equally to discussion felt that he was devoting 90 per cent of his attention to the girls. And so did his male pupils. They complained vociferously that the girls were getting too much talking time.

In other public contexts, too, such as seminars and debates, when women and men are deliberately given an equal amount of the highly valued talking time, there is often a perception that they are getting more than their fair share. Dale Spender explains this as follows:

The talkativeness of women has been gauged in comparison not with men but with silence. Women have not been judged on the grounds of whether they talk more than men, but of whether they talk more than silent women.

In other words, if women talk at all, this may be perceived as ‘too much’ by men who expect them to provide a silent, decorative background in many social contexts. This may sound outrageous, but think about how you react when precocious children dominate the talk at an adult party. As women begin to make inroads into formerly ‘male’ domains such as business and professional contexts, we should not be surprised to find that their contributions are not always perceived positively or even accurately.”

this story is so fucking cool, but I really really really wish they didn’t use “starving child from a small village in Zimbabwe”—yes, he lives in poverty and lives in a small village in Zimbabwe, but that’s the same white savior rhetoric that he’s criticizing.

Beyond that, though, this kid is fucking amazing and is so much more educated and succinct than grad students, even PhD students, that I’ve met, and almost everyone white American I’ve ever worked with in international non-profits. No education is better than lived experience.

Having checked back to the earliest posting of this I could find, there is literally NO SOURCE cited. Very neat, but I am guessing this is something pulled from The Onion.

I know a lot of girls who feel they can prove that through their love of whiskey, football, and other stereotypically male things that they are more worthy of friendship and approval by male peers. They feel and act superior to “girly girls” like myself because they don’t buy in to femininity, wear makeup, or eat ice cream when they’re sad, etc. I feel as if they’re declaring that being a woman is a bad thing, and feminine women should be ashamed for acting as such.

I can understand the frustration towards people hating on femininity-focused-women. But even gals who are “one of the guys” eat ice cream out of emotion, sometimes, too! :3

Why did this never occur to me? I love both of these movies A LOT.

you realize aronofsky bought the rights to perfect blue years ago to let him copy/pay homage to a scene in requiem for a dream (the bathtub one, specifically), then made black swan using essentially the same story with only a few details changed (the occupation of the main character, the setting, etc.) and copying multiple scenes, sometimes exactly, and then went on to say he took no inspiration or ideas or scenes from perfect blue and was not influenced by it at all, despite owning the rights to it,having previously done so (which was why he bought the rights in the first place), and the year 2010 being the year black swan came out as well as the death of satoshi kon, perfect blue’s director.

tl;dr FUCK aronofsky.

another thing about this whole mess that i don’t think many people are aware of is the fact perfect blue was based off of a novel written by takeuchi yoshikazu, which has not published outside of japan as far as i know.

so whether he’s aware of it or not, aronofsky screwed over two people when he made black swan.

That feel when you knew this even while seeing the movie, and it came out right after he died. :|

This work speaks about a family story, a spirit of family. In the middle of my forehead, the text means “Move the Mountain by Fool (Yu Kong Yi Shan)”. This traditional Chinese story is known by all common people, it is about determination and challenge. If you really want to do something, then it could really happen. Other texts are about human fate, like a kind of divination. Your eyes, nose, mouth, ears, cheekbone, and moles indicate your future, wealth, sex, disease, etc. I always feel that some mysterious fate surrounds human life which you can do nothing about, you can do nothing to control it, it just happened.”
